Botanical Name: gaultheria procumbens

As you know, Wintergreen has a very distinct scent. It's one of the most popular aromas used in scenting and flavoring everything from chewing gum (Do not ingest this oil!) to hair care products.

The uplifting and sweet scent is refreshing to many as it's used in a variety of ways, including sports products for sore muscles, skin care and for purely aromatic reasons.

Uses of Wintergreen Essential Oil

Most widely used to help soothe discomfort of sore muscles. Dilute a few drops with your favorite carrier oil and rub on your muscles for a warm and sensational feeling.
Add a couple of drops diluted in an unscented bath/shower gel or carrier oil to warm water in a soothing bath.
Pick up a recipe for a DIY toothpaste and use Wintergreen to flavor.
Diffuse in a water-based diffuser or vaporizer to create an invigorating atmosphere.
This oil makes a great addition to unscented skin and body care products to create a stimulating and invigorating feeling, not to mention its minty scent.
Dilute and apply a small amount to bee and insect bites.

Physical Description

Colorless to pale yellow in color, sometimes has a pinkish tint. As this oil ages, it can turn reddish brown and should not be used.

Aromatic Description

This oil has an intense, sweet, refreshing, and minty aroma with a hint of vanilla.

Biological Makeup and Components

Almost 90-98% methyl salicylate with formaldehyde and gaultheriline, ketone, secondary alcohol and ester.

Extraction Technique

Steam distillation of leaves.

This oil is a top note, blending well with oregano, lavender, mints, thyme, ylang ylang, and vanilla.
