Botanical Name: thymus vulgaris

Thyme Red has a fresh herbaceous, medicinal scent. It has often been described as sharp and warming.

Uses of Thyme Red Essential Oil

To support the Respiratory tract during the times of seasonal illness, use a drop or two into a diffuser.
Use 1-2 drops Thyme Red diluted in a carrier oil and rub in a clockwise direction on the tummy to help relieve the feeling of an upset stomach.
Emotional benefits when used in a diffuser: invigorating, refreshing, enlivening, promotes alertness, mental energy and brighten mood.
During a cold to help the feeling of better breathing, inhale 3 drops of thyme, and 3 drops of Peppermint.

History and Background

In Chinese Medicine, hot/dry action, water and metal element, powerful yang tonic, tonifies Heart yang.

It was used as an incense in Greek temples and the Egyptians used it in embalming. During the Middle Ages it was given to jousting Knights for courage, and a sprig of thyme was carried into courtrooms to ward off diseases.

Physical Description

This is red, brown or orange in color and has a thin consistency.

Aromatic Description

Hot, spicy, strongly aromatic aroma.

Biological Makeup and Components

Thymol and carvacrol (up to 60%), cymene, terpinene, camphene, borneol, linalol. Depending on source, can also contain geraniol, citral and thuyanol. Thymol and carvacrol are warming and active, the thuyanol type are penetrating and antiviral; the linalol or citral are sweet-scented and non-irritating.

Extraction Technique

Steam distillation from fresh or partially dried leaves and flowering tops.

Thyme Red is a middle note and blends well with Peppermint, Rosemary, Lavender, Tea Tree and Cypress. Use up to 1% in blends.
