Meet Paul Colgin, CEO

Meet Paul Colgin, CEO of Source Vital Apothercary

OWNER/CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER

Paul was originally introduced to Source Vitál in the mid-‘90s. An athlete in high school, he was constantly exercising, which means he was always sweating. And when you combine sweat with raging teenage hormones, he needed a solution for clogged pores and teenage acne.

Luckily for Paul, his uncle, Jerry, and his wife, Brea, had started the first true day spa in the United States in 1984. In the years after, they began formulating a line of clean, natural products for spa services and for the customers to use at home. Today, that line is known as Source Vitál.

Like most teenagers, not only was Paul constantly dealing with acne and blemishes, but he also dealt with bouts of dry, cracked skin he got from using over-prescribed products like Accutane. Jerry and Brea helped him understand what was happening, and then gave him products and some useful tips on how to combat his skin issues.

Armed with these resources, Paul created an effective skin care regimen, which included the original versions of the now-popular Algae Deep Cleanse, Algae Serum, and Acne & Blemish Infusion.

As a master esthetician who understood how the skin works inside and out, Brea helped him form other healthy habits as well, including: keeping your hands off your face while pretending not to sleep in class and staying hydrated by drinking plenty of water.

Paul’s personal experience represents a microcosm of Source Vitál’s driving aesthetic – taking a holistic approach to solve your deepest skin and body care concerns.

Fast forward a few years into college and immediately upon graduation, Paul worked at the Source Vitál headquarters in Houston, TX. He filled a myriad of roles over the next 4 ½ years, including product assembly, product making, shipping, inventory manager, web designer, marketing, IT, and even delivery driver.

He loved hearing amazing stories from customers, stories about how Source Vitál’s products changed people’s lives. Their products were not only solving skin issues, but also helping with overall health, and most impressively, self-confidence. These products helped customers feel better about themselves, which was an incredibly powerful thing to witness.

Even after leaving Source Vitál to pursue a career in marketing, branding, and customer experience, these stories always stuck with Paul. His goal was to create experiences for customers that would elicit a similar response as the stories he heard about Source Vitál products. Working in industries that weren’t as “fun” or “glamorous” as beauty and skin care wasn’t easy, but he was lucky enough to develop enhanced solutions and experiences that made life better for his customers.

After 11 years away and with the passing of his uncle, Jerry, in 2015, Paul knew it was time to return to his roots. In his second tenure at Source Vitál, this time as CEO, he wanted to play a key role in the success of the company, and that meant returning to the company’s roots of creating remarkable products for everyone. Products that make you say “wow” every time you use them. Products that work.

An Individualized Approach

In March 2017, Source Vitál wanted to start something new. Paul and his staff kept hearing stories from customers about HOW they were using the products. These customers were “a bunch of Mad Scientists, mixing and matching bases and oils, creams and infusions, tonics and serums!”

Paul knew then that Source Vitál had to create personalized products for each individual. While it might appear to be simpler and cheaper to create one-size-fits-most products, the best and most effective products are literally ones that are formulated for one’s individual needs, whether it’s by skin type (sensitive, oily, dry, normal) and/or skin concern (aging, acne, redness, scarring, etc.).

This revised and revitalized approach began with the Facial Cocktail. This face serum concoction allows you to tell us your skin type and skin concerns and then gives you the opportunity to choose what ingredients you want in your product. If you need a skin restoring infusion because you’re dealing with aging skin, choose it – it’s there. If you’re looking to reduce pore size, choose Prickly Pear Seed Oil – we have it.

We’ve now made thousands and thousands of cocktails. It’s become on of our top selling products in a mere matter of months. Paul and Source Vitál believe the next level of effectiveness is through collaboration with you. You know your skin best and you know your lifestyle needs. You don’t want us pushing products at you that don’t fit your needs or won’t work. Let’s work together so we can create YOUR line of products.

Our individualized approach has continued with our Make Your Own Mask kit in January 2018 and Make Your Own Bathing Salt Soak in July 2018. Paul and his team will continue to roll out “individualized” product offerings as time progresses.

PAST LIFE

Many experiences have led up to Paul’s success as CEO at Source Vitál Apothecary.

Paul has a BBA in Management Information Systems (MIS) with a minor in Marketing from the McCombs School of Business at the University of Texas at Austin. He also has an AAS in MIS from Lee College in Baytown, Texas.

He originally worked at Source Vitál from 1999 to 2004, covering many parts of the business including product assembly, production and shipping. Paul then transitioned to Internet Marketing Director, building and marketing the first collection of websites for Source Vitál.

Paul also served as E-commerce Director at PopeHair.com. During that time, PopeHair.com became the leading online retailer of hair and spa care products in the nation, including the top sales channel in the U.S. for several of the nation’s top beauty brands.

In 2004, Paul left Source Vitál and PopeHair.com to join Houston-based startup WhiteFence, where he served as Vice President of Internet Marketing. He helped transform the business into a rapidly growing direct-to-consumer E-commerce business, connecting millions of people to products and services from AT&T, Verizon, Comcast. and more.

In 2008, Paul left WhiteFence to help found Bounce Energy, a new retail energy provider serving the deregulated markets of Texas, Pennsylvania, and New York. Paul served on the Executive Management Team, filling the roles of Senior Vice President and CMO.

At Bounce, Paul handled all digital initiatives, including paid media advertising, SEO, social media, digital user experience, and content marketing. He played a key role in the creation of the brand, e-mail communications strategy, and mobile development, as well as conceptualized many of the company’s proprietary business applications. With revenues of over $150 million, Direct Energy acquired Bounce Energy in August of 2013.

Paul joined Direct Energy as Director of Digital Marketing, where he was responsible for all digital customer acquisition channels (paid media, SEO, social media, digital business development, and partnerships), online content, and brand initiative, as well as other major mobile projects.

Paul “rejoined” Source Vitál in June of 2015 when he purchased majority ownership of the company. In his role as CEO, Paul oversees all aspects of the business, including sales, marketing, production and operations, finance, and product development.

During his time as CEO, he has lead efforts to launch new products, such as Deozein Zest, Micellar Water, and After Workout Spray, while also re-branding the company as “Source Vitál Apothecary.”
