How to Apply Your Skincare Products in the Right Order

The general rule of thumb is to apply your skincare products is to apply your lightest-feeling products first, and your heaviest-feeling products last. This is simply because the thinner products you are using, likely can’t penetrate through the thicker ones. For example, if you were to incorrectly layer a serum after applying a moisturizer, you likely wouldn’t receive the full spectrum of benefits your serum has to offer.

Let’s dive into the sequencing of how you should be applying your skincare products. No need to worry if you don’t have all of these products in your arsenal. The beauty of this sequence is you can add products and subtract products as you like, but the order will stay the same, whether you have a 3-step or 10-step regimen.

Cleanser (Morning/Evening)

Cleansing is the first and most crucial step in any skincare routine. The goal of cleansing is to remove dirt, oil, and makeup from the skin's surface, allowing for better absorption of subsequent skincare products. It's essential to choose a cleanser that's suitable for your skin type.

For oily or acne-prone skin, look for a gel cleanser that contains ingredients that help unclog pores and reduce breakouts, such as our Lemon Gel Cleanser. If you have dry or sensitive skin, opt for a gentle cleanser that's free of harsh ingredients like alcohol or sulfates, which can strip the skin of its natural oils. Our Lavender Cleanser is a great option for those skin types.

To cleanse your face, wet it with lukewarm water and apply a small amount of cleanser to your fingertips. Gently massage the cleanser into your skin in circular motions for about 30 seconds, paying attention to areas that tend to accumulate oil and dirt, such as the T-zone. Rinse your face thoroughly with lukewarm water and pat dry with a clean towel.

Toner/Essence (Morning/Evening)

Toners are a misunderstood and often overlooked step in a skincare routine, but they can be an essential addition to anyone's routine. Toners help to calm and promote a sense of balance to the skin after cleansing, restoring the skin’s pH balance. They may also help remove any remaining traces of dirt or makeup that the cleanser may have missed.

The purpose of an essence is to feed the skin vital nutrients and feel luxurious on the skin. Essences are also formulated to go a step beyond toners in prepping the skin. Those expensive serums, moisturizers, and night creams – a good essence can actually promote deeper penetration and absorption of all those good ingredients you pay extra for.

If you have oily skin, look for toners or essences that contain ingredients that improve the look of congested skin, such as our Pure Toning Essence. If you have dry or sensitive skin, look for toners that contain soothing ingredients, such as our Blue Tansy Toning Essence.

To use a toner or essence, shake vigorously, spray directly (if applicable), or apply a small amount to a cotton pad and gently swipe it over your face, avoiding the eye area. Many toning essences and facial mists can also be reapplied to refresh the skin throughout the day.

Serums/Infusions (Morning/Evening)

Serums are packed with powerful ingredients that penetrate deeper into the skin than other skincare products, such as moisturizers and cleansers. This means that they can deliver targeted treatments for specific skin concerns, such as fine lines, hyperpigmentation, and acne.

Additionally, serums typically have a lightweight texture that absorbs quickly into the skin, making them a great option for layering under other products. Incorporating a serum into your skincare routine can provide an extra boost of hydration, improve skin texture and tone, and help prevent premature aging. Our Algae Serums are rich in botanical extracts and essential oils and provide skin with nourishment and luminosity. For a more personalized approach, choose our Custom Facial Cocktail.

To apply a serum, use your fingertips to gently pat a small amount onto your face and neck. To apply the Custom Facial Cocktail, shake well, squeeze the dropper bulb, loosen the dropper, and dispense 8-12 drops into the palm of your clean hand. Massage the serum into your face and neck. Serums should be used after toning and before moisturizing to allow for better absorption of the active ingredients.

Eye Cream (Morning/Evening)

The skin around the eyes is delicate and prone to fine lines and puffiness, so it's essential to use a specialized eye cream to help combat these issues. Eye creams are generally more emollient than facial moisturizers, making them better suited for the delicate eye area.

Look for eye creams that contain ingredients such as arnica and coffee extracts, or offer cooling and soothing ingredients to help reduce puffiness and dark circles. For eyes that are particularly prone to puffiness and dark circles, try our Cucumber Rose Eye Cream. For eyes with fine lines and wrinkles, try our Jasmine Fine Line Cream. As a bonus, this cream can be used around the lips and on the neck and décolleté as well.

To apply eye cream, use your ring finger to gently dab a small amount around the eye area, taking care not to tug or pull at the skin.

Moisturizer (Morning/Evening)

Moisturizer is a critical step in any skincare routine, as it helps to hydrate and protect the skin. Moisturizers come in various forms, including creams, lotions, and gels, and should be chosen based on your skin type.

If you have oily or acne-prone skin, look for lightweight, oil-free moisturizers that won't clog pores, such as Clear Skin Cream. If you have dry or mature skin, look for richer, more hydrating formulas that contain ingredients like hyaluronic acid and shea butter to help lock in moisture, such as our Max Moisture Cream.

To apply moisturizer, use a small amount and gently massage it into your skin in upward-circular motions making sure to cover your entire face and neck. When wearing under makeup, allow time for the cream to become fully absorbed by the skin.

Sunscreen (Morning)

Sunscreen is the most important step in any skincare routine, as it helps to protect the skin from the damaging effects of the sun's UV rays. UV radiation is a leading cause of premature aging, hyperpigmentation, and skin cancer, making sunscreen a non-negotiable step in any skincare routine.

To apply sunscreen, use a generous amount and apply it to your face, neck, and any other exposed areas of skin. Look for broad-spectrum sunscreens that protect against both UVA and UVB rays and have an SPF of 30 or higher

Masks (Optional/As Needed)

Facial masks are a great addition to any skincare routine, as they can provide a deep cleanse, exfoliation, or hydration boost to the skin. However, masks are optional and can be used as often as once or twice a week, depending on your skin type and concerns.

There are different types of masks for different skin concerns. Clay masks are great for oily or acne-prone skin, as they can absorb excess oil and draw out impurities, such as our Charcoal Clay Mask. for dry or dehydrated skin, look for ingredients that can provide an intense hydration boost, such as shea and mango butter, as found in our Chlorella Hydra Mask.

To use a mask, first, make sure your skin is clean and dry. Apply a thin layer of the mask to your face, avoiding the eye and mouth area, and leave it on for the recommended time, usually around 10-15 minutes (check the label for specific instructions.) Rinse off the mask with lukewarm water and follow up with your regular skincare routine.

Facial Exfoliators (Optional/As Needed)

Facial exfoliators are a great way to help slough off dead skin cells and reveal smoother brighter skin. However, it's important to use them in moderation and choose the right type of exfoliator for your skin type.

There are two main types of facial exfoliators: physical and chemical. Physical exfoliators use small particles, such as microspheres, to physically scrub away dead skin cells. Our Silt Scrub is perfect for all skin types, while our Fango Scrub is particularly great for those with oily or congested skin.

Chemical exfoliators, on the other hand, use acids like glycolic, lactic, or salicylic acid to dissolve dead skin cells and promote cell turnover. For a gentler, more natural alternative to chemical exfoliation, try our Aroma Peel. It uses a concentrated blend of pure, undiluted essential oils work to eliminate dead skin cells instead of harsh acids.

To use an exfoliator, first, make sure your skin is clean and dry. Apply a small amount of the exfoliator to your face and gently massage it into your skin in circular motions, focusing on any areas of concern. Rinse off the exfoliator with lukewarm water and follow up with your regular skincare routine.

By following these essential steps of a basic skincare routine, you can achieve a healthier, more radiant complexion. Remember to always start with a clean slate, protect your skin from the sun, and nourish it with hydrating products. Optional steps like facial masks and exfoliators can help address specific concerns and enhance your results.

With consistency and patience, you can build a skincare routine that works for you and leaves you feeling confident in your own skin. So, go ahead and give your skin the love it deserves!
