Valerian Root is referenced in the Old Testament and in Egyptian papyri. Primarily used in the perfume industry, you will find it in incense for rituals. Valerian is known to be an aid for chronic conditions, such as rheumatism, slow healing skin infections such as abcesses and ulcers. Normally in a gum resin form, it is found in many recipes for killing pain, as an antispasmodic, diuretic, and emmenagogue. Before the advent of prescription medications after World War II, Valerian Root was widely used as a sleep remedy. It is still widely used in Europe. This oil is green to brown in color with a warm, woodsy, balsamic, and musky aroma.>

Holistic Uses:Used in Chinese and Ayurevedic medicine for nerves and insomnia. Emotional stress, despondency.

Exceptions:Possible sensitization in some individuals. Avoid during pregnancy. Do not use for children. Use in small concentrations.

Blends Well With:Valerian blends well with cedarwood, lavender, mandarin, patchouli, petitgrain, pine, rosemary. Use in small concentrations.

Chemical Components:Bornyl acetate, isovalerate, caryophyllene, pinene, valeranone, ionone, eugenyl isovalerae, borneol, patchouli alcohol, valerianal

Process of Extraction:Mostly steam distillation from the rhizomes or solvent extraction.
