History and BackgroundValerian Root is an ancient oil, found in Rome and Greece, and used for insomnia. Native American Indians used Valerian for a wound antiseptic. This oil is referenced in the Old Testament and in Egyptian papyri. Valerian was known to be an aid for chronic conditions, such as rheumatism, slow healing skin infections, such as abcesses and ulcers. It was found in many recipes for killing pain, relieves spasms, moving fluid, and diuretic, and stimulates menstrual flow.
Before the advent of prescription medications, Valerian Root was widely used as a sleep remedy. It is still widely used as a sleep aid and has been clinically studied for its relaxation properties.
