Can I Use Essential Oils with Meditation?

Enhance the Quality of Your Practice

From helping to decrease stress and anxiety to increasing focus and self-awareness, the power of meditation is real and time-tested. Scientists agree that regular meditation provides innumerable health and wellness benefits.

Whether you’re just beginning to explore the wonders of regular meditation, or if you’re looking to take your practice to the next level, incorporating essential oils into your meditation routine can help enhance your overall experience.

How to use essential oils in meditation

For many, the most difficult part of establishing a regular meditative practice is maintaining focus. With the stresses, responsibilities, and pressures of daily life, it’s hard to keep nagging thoughts and emotions at bay.

During meditation, many practitioners use their breath as a point of focus. When the mind begins to wander (as it’s bound to do), practitioners will return to their breath, narrowing in on the sensation of it entering and leaving the body.

That’s where essential oils come in.

Relaxation

When you are in a calm, relaxed state you will be able to be more present during your meditation practice and thereby enjoying the full benefits of the experience.

Mental Focus

Meditation is a great way to teach yourself to quiet the mental chatter that can lead to feelings of anxiety, insomnia and lack of control. Many essential oils have properties that can help to silence the ongoing chorus in your head and help you to focus on the now.

Tap into Your Creativity

Many of the oils that are great for mental focus are also good at unlocking your creativity or removing blocks. Meditation is also said to clear away the mental or emotional blocks that can keep you from fully tapping into your creative potential.

Deep Breathing

We mentioned the use of breath in meditation above. But sometimes, due to allergies or illness, easy breathing can be a bit challenging. Try using essential oils with respiratory benefits to keep your passages open.

Connecting With Your Environment

Tapping into your inner self and gaining a greater understanding of your mind and emotions can be one of the most rewarding aspects of meditation. In addition, having a greater sense of the world around you is also important for living a balanced life. Essential oils are a great way to create a connection to the world around you. While you are meditating, take a moment to connect to the sounds, scents, and sounds that surround you. The aromatherapy powers of essential oils will help build a greater bond.

Using essential oils during meditation is all about emotional support and allowing you to achieve peace of mind. Adding essential oils to your routine is simple – either inhalation or direct application on the skin.

Diffusion

One of the easiest ways to use essential oils for aromatherapy inhalation is with an essential oil diffuser. An electric atomizer diffuser, or one that uses water, disperses essential oils into the air so you can better breathe in their properties. Using essential oils in this way can encourage relaxation and stimulate the senses.

Direct application

Another method to incorporate essential oils in your meditation practice is by direct application to the skin. Apply to your pulse points, target sore muscles or joints, or apply to your hands for self-targeted inhalation.

Always dilute essential oils (except Lavender or Tea Tree) before applying on the skin. Essential Oils are extremely potent and can burn or irritate the skin at full strength. We recommend mixing pure essential oils with a carrier oil like Jojoba Gold. If you’ve never used an essential oil on your skin, be sure you do a patch test to make sure you don’t have any adverse reactions. Itchy, red, inflamed skin will not allow you to get the best out of meditation.

The Best Essential Oils for Meditation

Different oils can promote different moods, but for most people, the essential oils you choose to use really comes down to personal preference. With that in mind, we wanted to share some of our favorite essential oils that we personally use for meditation.

Lavender

Universally revered for its relaxing properties, Lavender essential oil is great for a pre-bedtime meditation session. If you have difficulty focusing or feel restless during your meditation, Lavender’s calming aroma can balance you, help you settle in, and focus.

Eucalyptus

If your preferred method of meditation is to focus on your breaths, Eucalyptus is an ideal essential oil. Eucalyptus naturally inspires you to take a deep breath. Clear the airways, and breathe deeply.

Neroli

Bright, cheery Neroli can be transformative when used in a meditative state. Known for inspiring creativity and clarity, Neroli can help to reduce the feeling of inflammation, or the tightness and tension that’s associated with stress, and promote self-acceptance.

Chakra Oils

If you meditate, you may be familiar with the idea of “chakras.” Essentially, chakras are thought to be the seven energy zones in the body. Positioned from the base of the spine to the top of the head, they are thought to influence bodily functions, both physical and emotional. When your chakras are out of alignment, you may experience certain symptoms that could prompt you to seek out realignment. Oftentimes, realignment can be achieved in part through meditation.

If you believe in the idea of the seven chakras, adding our Chakra Oils to your routine may be beneficial. Tailored to each of the seven chakras, our Chakra Oils are formulated with pure essential and carrier oils that are chosen to help balance and support the energies of each individual chakra.

Like most things, using essential oils in your meditation is about finding a routine that suits you and your needs. We recommend trying out a few different essential oils or essential oil blends, paying close attention to the way they make you feel during and after your practice. By tuning in this way, you’ll quickly discover which essential oils help you achieve the peace, serenity, and clarity you’re seeking.
