Botanical Name: cistus landiferas

Cistus, while not one of the more popular essential oils, may smell familiar to many. It is one of the ingredients in many church incense blends.

It is one of the many oils mentioned in the Bible, also known as Rock Rose and Labdanum. Cistus is widely used for meditation and in skin care products and perfumes.

Uses of Cistus Essential Oil

For meditation, combine Cistus, Frankincense, Myrrh, and Sandalwood in a blend to center and focus the mind.
For aging skin, mix a few drops in a unscented cream or lotion to improve the look of loose, sagging skin.
A good fixative in perfume blends, use in small amounts. Too much will overwhelm your blend.
Feeling stressed, anxious, angry, put a drop on your hands and breathe deeply 3-4 times for a different perspective on issues.
Put a drop on your air conditioning filter to shift the energy in your home space.

History and Background

Cistus Essential Oil - The oldest documented oil, Cistus is first mentioned in Exodus 30:34 as a Holy anointment. It has been used since the Middle Ages in Europe to treat wounds and ulcers of the skin.

Especially effective for mediation to quiet the mind for deeper concentration, Cistus encourages communication, and brings out feelings. It has an affinity for the thrid and sixth charkas.

Physical Description

Dark yellow to amber color. Thick,viscous consistency.

Aromatic Description

This oil has a warm, sweet, balsamic, musky, leathery, deep, rich aroma.

Biological Makeup and Components

Pinenes (camphene, sabinene, myrcene, phellandrene, limonene, cymene), alcohols (cineol, borneol, nerol, geraniol) and ketones (fenchone).

Extraction Technique

Steam distillation of crude gum or leaves.

Cistus essential oil is a base note and blends well with Clary Sage, Pine, Juniper, Bergamot, Cypress, Vetiver, Patchouli, Chamomile, Frankincense, Sandalwood, Rose, Myrrh, and Lavender. It is one of the best fixatives. Cistus gives a natural musk note to blends. Use in small concentrations in blends.
