Many of us are familiar with the aroma of camphor in many over-the-counter remedies, especially for respiratory complaints.

The pure Camphor White is more concentrated and potent. This essential oil comes from the camphor tree, which is native to Asia, specifically in Japan, Taiwan (Formosa), and China.

It's very strong, so a little goes along way.

Uses of Camphor White Essential Oil
  • Today, camphor is mainly used in creams and ointments for rheumatic pain, neuralgia, arthritis, sore muscles, sprains and bruises.
  • This oil can also be used is as an insect repellent. Just soak a piece of cloth with camphor White oil, place it outside your house, and let its camphoraceous aroma do the work.
  • For a therapuetic bath: add two to three drops of white camphor oil, diluted in a bath salt, body wash or carrier oil, to your bath and soak in tub for 10 minutes.
  • To relieve the feeling of cold and caough symptoms, add two to three drops of camphor White oil in a diffuser.
  • Ayurvedic Medicine(ayurvedic medicinea) Karputa: The traditional forehead marking, the tilak, is made from camphor and saffron. This combination promotes cool thinking and meditation.

History and Background

The camphor oil has been used and extracted from different plant species over the centuries. In ancient China the camphor tree was used mainly for its wood, as the Chinese never mastered the art of extracting the oil which they used as an embalming agent but instead imported Borneo camphor (Dryobalanops aromatica) for this purpose.

Once it was used as an external pain remedy for bruises, wounds, inflammation, gout and rheumatic joints, and internally to treat hysteria, epilepsy and heart related ailment.

Additionally, it was used in incense form as a treatment for asthma, bronchitis, emphysema and other respiratory ailments. Up until 1950’s it was used as a stimulant and was given as treatment for fainting.

Physical Description

Colorless to pale yellow in color.

Aromatic Description

This oil has a sharp, pungent and camphoraceous aroma.

Biological Makeup and Components

Cineol, pinene, terpineol, menthol, thymol. Does not contain safrol which is toxic and carcinogenic.

Extraction Technique

Steam distillation from wood, root stumps and branches. The oil is then rectified under vacuum and filter pressed to produce fractionated oil.

Camphor White essential oil is a middle to top note and blends well with Basil, Cajuput, Chamomile, Lavender and Melissa, and other oils in the lauraceae family.
