Essential oils are the
volatile aromatic, organic chemicals produced in various
parts of plants. They are found as micro droplets in the
stems, seeds, nuts, fruits, blossoms, bark, leaves,
wood, roots, buds, rhizomes, and berries of these
plants. They each carry their own individual
characteristics.
In order to have the finest
selection of essential oils in
the world, we first have to
study where the best plant
varieties are grown. For
example, the best lavendula
angustifolia (Lavender
Official) is found in the
Provence region of France,
growing approximately 1100
meters above sea level. In this
micro climate and altitude, this
variety, wildcrafted and/or
organically grown, produces the
best oil of its particular
variety.
Secondly, we must have an expert
understanding of the various
extraction techniques used to
isolate these precious oils from
the plant itself. The extraction
methods are: cold-pressing,
steam distillation, absolutes
(solvent extraction process),
and CO˛ extraction. For example,
the best extraction method for
the earlier mentioned Lavender
oil is steam distillation. Of
course, it must be performed by
an expert distiller,
knowledgeable of when to harvest
and distill the Lavender. This
must be done exactly at the
proper temperature, time, and
pressure. The result is
the finest Lavender oil in the
world.
These same principles have to be
applied to all essential
oils, absolutes, and resinoids
that we employ in today's
therapeutic aromatherapy world.
