Botanical Name: Laurus nobilis
Anatomical areas: Digestive
system, genito-urinary system, immune system.
Allopathic uses: Antirheumatic,
antiseptic, bactericidal, diaphoretic, digestive, diuretic,
emmenagogue, fungicidal, hypotensive, sedative, stomachic.
Indications: Dyspepsia,
flatulence, loss of appetite, scanty periods, colds, flu,
tonsillitis and viral infections.
Holistic uses: Calming, improves
mental clarity, alertness and memory, sharpens the senses,
promotes restful sleep, reduces stress.
Contraindications: Relatively
non-toxic and non-irritant. Can cause dermatitis in some
individuals. Use in moderation due to possible narcotic
properties of methyl eugenol. Do not use during pregnancy.
Blending: Base to middle note.
Blends well with pine, cypress, juniper, clary sage,
rosemary, olibanum, labdanum, lavender, citrus and spice
oils.
Chemical Components: Cineol
(30-50%), pinene, linalol, terpineol acetate, methyl eugenol.
Over 50 components in 1-2% concentration.
Characteristics: Greenish-yellow
color. Spicy-medicinal aroma. Spicy sweet, fresh, balsamic.
Extraction: Steam distillation
from dried leaf and branchlets.
