Botanical Name: Ocimum basilicum
Anatomical areas: Skin, muscles
and joints, respiratory system, digestive system, genito-urinary
system (adrenal cortex), immune, system, nervous system,
cephalic region.
Allopathic uses: Anti-spasmodic,
intestinal antiseptic, cephalic, stomachic, nervous tonic.
Indications: Intestinal
infections, gastric spasms, mental fatigue, insomnia,
depression, migraines, herpes, shingles.
Holistic uses: Active on cephalic
areas, will sharpen perception and be active in the area of
the 6th chakra. Calming, mood uplifting, promotes restful
sleep, sharpens senses, reduces stress, useful in
meditation. Encourages happiness and peace and stimulates
the conscious mind.
Contraindications: Most
non-toxic, non-irritant, possible sensitization in some
individuals. Avoid during pregnancy. Should not be used on
children under 16 years. Do not use in baths.
Blending: Top note. Blends well
with bergamot, black pepper, cedarwood, chamomile roman,
clary sage, coriander, cypress, eucalyptus (all), fennel,
ginger, grapefruit, juniper, lavender, lemon, marjoram,
niaouli, lime, opopanax, oakmoss, orange, oregano, palmarosa,
pine, rosemary, sage, tea tree, citronella, geranium, hyssop
and other “green” notes.
Chemical Components: Linalol
(40-45%), methyl chavicol (23.8%) and small amounts of
eugenol, limonene and citronellol.
Characteristics: Colorless to
pale yellow color. Light, fresh, sweet-spicy scent with
balsamic undertones.
Extraction: Steam distillation of flowering herbs.
