Balsam Peru

Botanical Name: Myroxylon balsamum

Anatomical areas: Skin, muscles and joints, respiratory system, immune system, nervous system.

 

Allopathic uses: Anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, balsamic, expectorant, parasiticide, stimulant, promotes growth of epithelial cells.

 

Indications: Dry skin, eczema, rashes, scabies, sores, ringworm, wounds, low blood pressure, rheumatism, asthma, bronchitis, coughs, colds, nervous tension, stress, toughens nipples in preparation for nursing.

 

Holistic uses: Calming, mood uplifting, promotes restful sleep. Reduces stress. Useful in meditation.

 

Contraindications: Non-toxic, non-irritant.

 

Blending: Base note. Blends well with ylang ylang, patchouli, petitgrain, sandalwood, rose, spices, floral and oriental bases. Rounds respiratory oils.

 

Chemical Components: Benzoic and cinnamic acid, esters such as benzyl benzoate,
benzyl cinnamate, and cinnamyl cinnamate. The crude balsam contains approximately 50-64% oil, referred to as ‘cinnamein’, and 20-28% resin.

 

Characteristics: Pale amber or brown color, with viscous liquid consistency. Rich, sweet, balsamic, ‘vanilla-like’ aroma.

 

Extraction: High vacuum dry distillation.
