Essential Oils, Good! Synthetic Perfumes, Bad!

Thursday, April 26th, 2012

This is not new news, but it is important news and worth repeating.

Yes, we are going to talk about synthetic fragrances again! The Campaign for Safe Cosmetics releases reports from time to time about the dangers of synthetic colognes and perfumes.

In 2010, Campaign for Safe Cosmetics commissioned an independent lab to test 17 popular perfumes and partnered with the Environmental Working Group to access the data. The main focus of this study was  “secret” ingredients- those ingredients that do not have to be disclosed to the public because of a loophole in the law which allows manufacturers to hide these ingredients as “proprietary” or trade secrets. (This practice of nondisclosure is used regularly in body and skin care labeling.)

This study confirms what previous studies have shown for years. It confirms that synthetic scent is, for many reasons, unhealthy. This is not just about the initial users of perfume, cologne, etc. Not unlike cigarette smoke, it affects people second-hand. These products range from high-end perfumes and colognes, household cleansers,  baby products- any product that has a scent!

With so many synthetically scented products in use, both in our work sites and homes, the public will and should become more and more concerned and knowledgeable about these fragrance dangers. Please take a little time and read this information.

Below is the link to the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics findings. If you scroll down that page, you can click on the detailed study and other related articles. This includes the actual list of perfumes that were tested and what was found in them.

Not only are pure essential oils used in our products for scenting, but also for their healthful properties. We only use essential oils to scent out products. No synthetic scents here!

Stress Relief Bath Salts- This calming blend of essential oils and Dead Sea Salts is balancing, uplifting, and calming. Fragrant and soulful, Petitgrain, Lavender, Pine, Melissa, Thyme, and Basil will quiet your stress and mental fatigue.

Why Dead Sea Salts?

The beautiful Dead Sea supplies us with the most therapeutic salts in the world!

We have many people ask us why we use Dead Sea Salts exclusively in our products. The reason is because the salts from this ancient sea have the highest content of minerals than any other salts in the world. Other sea salts have sodium content of 80-97%. Dead Sea Salts content of Sodium Chloride is only 3%. This leaves room for other more beneficial minerals. Epsom Salts are mostly Magnesium Chloride, again, leaving little room for other beneficial minerals.

Too much Sodium Chloride is a cause for health concerns, including high blood pressure, the increase of fluid retention, and dry skin. With 97% Sodium Chloride in some other sea salts, user beware. Epsom salts and regular table salt are even less desirable.

Our Dead Sea Salts contain:
37.71% is sea water, sometimes called Water of Crystallization.
34.21% Magnesium Chloride heals skin tissue and provides an anti-allergenic protection to the surface of the skin. This means it slows down the aging of the skin. This mineral also promotes energy, combats stress and fluid retention, and calms the nervous system.
24.42 % Potassium Chloride is a skin “regulator” that helps balance the skin. Signs of a potassium deficiency can present itself as abnormally dry skin or acne. This mineral also energizes the body. This mineral needs to be replenished in the body after strenuous exercise.
3.43 % Sodium Chloride, in small quantities such as this, improves the skin’s metabolism and maintains the balance and osmosis in the extra-cellular fluid of the skin. By helping to balance lymphatic fluid, Sodium strengthens immune systems.
.21 % Calcium Chloride, which has regenerating properties for the skin, is important to cell protection. Calcium also regulates cell permeability and promotes normalization of cells. This mineral prevents fluid retention, increases circulation, and strengthens bones and nails.
Other minerals found in low percentages, from .09% to .9% are:
Bromine, which relaxes muscles & nerves.
Strontium, which has anti-inflammatory properties and reduces irritation of contact dermatitis. Contact dermatitis is a problem for many people who use cosmetics that contain problematic, but common ingredients, such as synthetic scent (parfum) and isopropyl myristate (a major ingredient in rust remover).
Zinc, which promotes cell renewal, hence anti-aging.
Manganese, which is an anti-oxidant, increases the skin’s circulation, and the condition of connective tissue.
Boron, which relieves the discomfort of psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis.
Lithium increases the effectiveness of balneotherapy for inflamed skin, including psoriasis, and other painful skin conditions and itching.
Natural sulfates which contain a natural disinfectant.
Insolubles (such as tiny bits of seashell) can be found at .01%.

These percentages are taken from our current MSDS sheet from Israel. Due to variances in rainfall, depth, season, and temperature of the water, these Dead Sea Salts, like any truly natural substance, will have small fluctuations from time to time.

These minerals (even those in trace amounts) add substantial value to the reduction of wrinkles in the skin, improved skin barrier function, reduction in roughness and inflammation of the skin, and to general wellness.

One study reported that Dead Sea salts reduces wrinkles (“decreased wrinkle depth by 40%).

The study done by Dr. J. Arndt, with psoriasis sufferers, showed that of the 50 cases studies included, 54% were totally healed. The 50 patients were between the ages of 14-77 years old. They were treated to 3-4 baths per week for a 3-4 week time frame, using a 10% concentration of the Dead Sea Salts. The majority of symptoms showed significant improvement during the first week. Itching, sleep disturbance, and scaling skin were much relieved. Unlike so many prescription drugs, Dead Sea Salts have no side effects. (Arndt, Dr. J. 1982, Salt from the Promised Land Helps Psoriasis Patients, Arztliche Praxis, 34(48)).

Another study was done by Dr. I. Machtey with 103 patients suffering from osteoarthritis and tendonitis. These patients were treated with concentrations of 7.5%, 2%, and .5% concentration of Dead Sea Salts. Within one week, improvement was found by those using the higher percentages. By the end of his study, 80% of the participants reported less pain, 70% experienced improved mobility, and 60% were able to decrease their use of analgesic medication. (Dead Sea Balneotherapy in Osteoarthritis”, Dr. Machtey (Hasharon Hospital, Petach-Tikya, Israel). “Published in Proceedings of International Seminar on Treatment of Rheumatic Diseases”, John Wright, PSG Inc. (1982))

When Dead Sea salts are in a product, the manufacturer or distributor is proud to reveal that. You will see it on the label and in the ingredient listing. Other salts may be shown on ingredient labels as simply “sea salt”. Other non-Dead Sea salts ingredients may be designated as “crystal salt”, “mineral salt”,  “maris sal”, “salts de mer”, “fleur de sal”, “organic salt”, “sal del mar”, “sel de mer”, “sale marino”, “pure sea salts”, “epsom salts”, “Himalayan salts”, etc.  These are not Dead Sea salt. Often a product will contain a small amount of Dead Sea salt, so that can be claimed on the label and ingredient panel. Then, other sea salts, Epsom salt, or just plain table salt are added as fillers. Read your labels and ask questions! The benefits to you are well worth it!

At Source Vitál, Dead Sea Salts from Israel are the only salts we sell and use in our products.

The Art of Bathing

Tuesday, March 13th, 2012

In our modern, fast-paced lives, we very often sacrifice traditions. Sometimes these compromises are unnecessary and unhealthy. One of these lost traditions is “The Art of Bathing”. At Source Vitál, we celebrate this nurturing, healthful, and rejuvenating practice.

Many past cultures, most notably the Roman Empire, recognized the health and spiritual benefits of bathing. All you need to is 20-30 minutes, one to three times a week, to make a profound difference in your well-being. Ritual Bathing can lower blood pressure, soothe the mind, detoxify, de-stress, and reduce fluid retention in our bodies.

This conversation is not just for women. It is also for men and children. It is for all ages.

We are not talking about the old fashioned bubble bath. Bubbles are the result of surfactants as ingredients in products. Surfactants are drying to the skin. We are talking about healing Dead Sea Salts, aromatic Bath Oils, and healthful algae. We are about taking a little time to relax in warm not hot, water infused with healthful products.

Choose this relaxing way to care for yourself. Source Vitál makes it easy with many natural bathing choices.

Some of our Favorite First Aid Stories featuring First Aid Spray, Oil and Cream

Friday, March 9th, 2012

All of our products are beneficial and we hear compliments and success stories about all of them. Some of the most talked about products are First Aid Oil and its related products, First Aid Cream and First Aid Spray. All of us here at Source Vital have our First Aid Stories, as do so many of our customers!

This pure essential oil blend was formulated over 20 years ago, from a need for a remedy that addressed all kinds of stings, bites, bruises, bumps, cuts- any kind of “boo-boo”. It was originally named “B, B & C”. Little did we know that such a little bottle of essential oils would be so powerful!

Holistic, Organic First Aid Oil

Brea Gratia, owner of Sanctuary Spa d’ Sante in Houston and my ex-wife/business partner, will tell you about being on vacation in Asheville, North Carolina. While hiking, we met up with a fellow hiker as he stepped into a wasp nest in a hollow log. In pain with many stings, he was instantly relieved when Brea poured First Aid Oil onto his leg. Instrumental in formulating First Aid Oil, Brea will also tell you about her run-ins with fire ants and how First Aid Oil helped those heal. She will tell you the same thing we know- the quicker you can get the Oil onto the wound, the better it works.

We are supplying several veterinary clinics. These vets are using and selling this essential oil blend on animals, especially dogs and horses. It seems to help heal “hot spots” and other skin conditions in animals. We see it being used on bed sores with the chronically ill in hospitals. First Aid Oil is used to prepare the skin for surgery, helping the skin layers heal and repair quickly after the incisions.

One of our employees took a fall and found that First Aid Oil dramatically healed deep bruising down her leg.

A few years ago, we decided we needed a spray form of First Aid, for sunburns and such. Before we knew it, we had clients commenting that it was a great insect repellant. As far as we can tell, as a repellant, First Aid Spray works for some and not for others.

One employee gave the spray to a friend with a toddler that had a chronic case of diaper rash. The pediatrician-prescribed creams and ointments were not healing the rash and the child (and mother) were miserable. A couple of days later, she called us in amazement. Her son’s severe diaper rash was gone. Of course, as she laughingly told us, he still wanted to be sprayed during every diaper change, as he liked the cool feeling! We have had many mothers and grandmothers brag about the First Aid Spray for all those “boo-boos”.

Our next step was to formulate the First Aid Cream, mainly in respond to a need for an emollient product to be applied after waxing. Now, we have clients using First Aid Cream for all kinds of skin issues. It is perfect for those wounds that need the staying power of a cream.

Holli Briggs is one of our long-time clients. She is a massage therapist, living and practicing in Henderson, Texas. She sent us a funny and heartfelt testimonial about our First Aids. It is too long to copy here but she tells us about it healing a burn on her son’s back from an errant Roman candle, a bee sting that she was allergic to, and a friend’s First Aid Spray experience while going through breast cancer treatments. It seems First Aid Spray helped not only heal the surgery site when too tender to touch, but also relieved the itch that accompanied her flaky scalp as she was losing her hair. Holli calls it “Blue Juice”.

And, on and on. Simple, but so effective. If you have not made our First Aid Remedies part of you life, try them. Share them with your friends and family. You will be so glad you did! And, don’t forget to send us your First Aid stories!
